Established in 2010 by Tony O. Elumelu MFR the Foundation identifies and grooms African business leaders and entrepreneurs to achieve its central objective of meaningfully advancing Africa’s economic development and prosperity.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation seeks to contribute to the economic transformation of the African continent by working to foster and impact Africa’s business leaders and entrepreneurs at various stages of their development, from business students and young entrepreneurs to CEO’s of global corporations.

As an African based and funded institution, The Foundation provides a particularly relevant African perspective. It works to ensure that African firms are represented and professionally equipped to compete in the global mainstream of business.

In all that it does, The Tony Elumelu Foundation will be guided and supported by a committed international Advisory Board who themselves represent excellence in the African and international business worlds.




Job Description:
Managers lead the strategy development and programmatic initiative work within their specific area of focus. Working under the direction of the Foundation CEO, Managers play the key role in finding, shaping, developing and implementing new opportunities for the Foundation in collaboration with other Managers, research and support professionals. As the work in their focus area expands, they will also be responsible for managing small teams.

Managers must be able to lead work that ranges across multiple sectors, topics and fields. Their focus is to responsibly and professionally use the assets of The Tony Elumelu Foundation to foster business leadership and entrepreneurship in Africa through provision of fellowships and grants, impact investments, strategic covenings, speaking engagements, and/ or media opportunities as appropriate. To be effective in this role, Managers should be flexible in their interests and passions, and looking for a way to contribute to the emerging work of the Foundation. Further, Managers work with evaluation professionals to provide a continuous assessment of the impact of their work, leading to continuous improvement. Managers will also represent the Foundation in a variety of contexts.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working within a team structure, sharing information and insights, and engaging in ongoing intellectual exchange.

This Manager position is responsible for developing and managing the Foundation’s impact investing strategy and portfolio. Impact Investing is the use of for-profit investment to address social and environmental challenges. The Tony Elumelu Foundation believes that in the context of 21st century philanthropy, impact investing is a key approach towards achieving our mission of fostering business leadership and entrepreneurship in Africa. In light of this, a portion of the Foundation’s resources will be deployed annually through strategic and catalytic impact investments across multiple sectors and geographies in Africa. Over time, the impact investing portfolio will be transformed in to the endowment of the Foundation ensuring that all aspects of the Foundation’s work – either through fellowships, grants, impact investments, or endowment investments – are all focused on the same social mission.

The position is based in Lagos, Nigeria and reports to the Foundation CEO.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

In conjunction with the CEO, developing a short and long term impact investing strategy for the Foundation, including sectors and geographies of focus within Africa
Originating transactions: Identifying and developing potential new investment opportunities
Reviewing investment opportunities, business plans, term sheets and other documentation for potential investments
Conducting review, credit-underwriting and due diligence processes for potential investments. Often, this will be undertaken in conjunction with a range of other co-investors, including other foundations, banks, pension funds, fund advisors and other institutional investors.
Negotiating and executing transactions
As the Foundation’s impact investing portfolio grows, monitoring existing investments and business aspects of the Foundation’s current portfolio of investments
Providing reporting to senior leadership on the performance of the investment portfolio
Expanding the Foundation’s relationships and networks in the impact investment community
Serving as a key focal point for the impact investing industry in Nigeria and [West] Africa
Organizing and facilitating convenings on impact investing in Africa
Representing the Foundation at conferences and meetings
Managing and motivating staff through effective leadership, mentoring, coaching, development, facilitation, evaluation and rewards
Performing other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

An advanced degree in business (MBA) or other advanced degree (e.g., JD or MPA) coupled with appropriate professional experience
A minimum of three years working experience in private equity, asset management, capital markets, corporate finance, social investing or related areas, preferably with deal-structuring experience
Fluent oral and written English; comprehension of French and/ or Portuguese a plus
